Clarinet Lessons for All Ages and All Levels!
Music's Cool offers clarinet lessons for children and adults. Children usually start clarinet around age 10, though students as young as 8 who can produce a proper airstream can be successful. Younger students who wish to play clarinet can also begin on recorder. Recorders are very inexpensive, and the student can seamlessly transition from recorder to clarinet when he or she is ready.
Adults - it's never too late to start clarinet lessons!
Beginning clarinet students should have a plastic or composite clarinet. These are the most durable, and the best suited to younger players. Intermediate and advancing students can choose to upgrade to a wooden instrument. These instruments sound better, though they are susceptible to temperature and humidity. Metal clarinets used to be fairly common, but are no longer in widespread use. Clarinets come in many sizes, but Bb soprano clarinets are by far the most common, and are used almost exclusively in school programs.
Beginners will learn:
To form a proper embouchure
How to produce a good sound
Posture and hand placement
Assembly and reed placement
To read notes on the musical staff
To count, say, and play rhythms correctly
To handle and clean the instrument
To play some fun music!
Intermediate students will learn dynamics, articulations and excellent technique though scales and arpeggios. They will also learn crucial ensemble skills by playing duets, and begin to explore solo repertoire.
Advanced students will study technical topics (overtones, altissimo, alternate fingerings), advanced etudes, solo repertoire, and musical interpretation. Advancing students may also choose to take up Bb bass clarinet for school concert band.
Intermediate and advanced students may be eligible to join one of the Music's Cool ensembles, which give students fun, exciting, real world experience playing music in a band setting.
